Panola College Professor Presents Findings at National
Conference
Dr. Barbara Cordell, Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences, was selected for a poster presentation at the recent annual conference of the American Holistic Nurses Association in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her presentation was on "Healing the Air: Essential Oils and Healing the Effects of Tobacco". Dr. Cordell's research was on the use of two essential oils, angelica archangelica and piper nigrum (black pepper), to help reduce cravings for tobacco and increase time between tobacco use. Both oils were found effective. Essential oils are pure plant essences distilled and used for their therapeutic properties. Often called "aromatherapy", essential oils may or may not smell good but have healing benefits. Dr. Cordell's research was a launching pad for a committee to look at the negative effects of tobacco on the Panola College campus and make recommendations to College administration. She presented the Committee's work as part of her poster. The American Holistic Nurses Association conference proceedings can be found at www.ahna.org

Stories were told over the years about how Dan Duke travelled with his books, on horseback, all over Panola County, to help educate people who could not attend school. Park and Zuma Rayburn were descendants of the Rayburns and Dukes. Park Rayburn, son of B. V. and Annie Duke Rayburn, was among the first from Panola County to join the U. S. However, if no one from the Church applies, the scholarship will be awarded to a sophomore student based on financial need. “The church realized that in addition to providing some assistance to its members, it could also help many hardworking individuals in our community who, because of their vocation, do not have the financial resources to attend college or provide financial assistance to their college bound children,” Patterson continued. “This scholarship will help meet these needs.” The Central Baptist Church Scholarship will be awarded annually to a sophomore student. Panola College Rodeo Team
Receives Memorial Scholarship Donation Bull riders develop a passion that is second to none. Josh Edward “Turtle” Griffin of Garrison, TX, was no exception. From birth he dreamed of being a cowboy, and a “Cowboy” he was. Riding and spurring everything in the yard, including a propane tank. Many people hope to get “15 minutes of fame”; bull riders just want 8 seconds at a time. Josh always told his family that if he died, he hoped it would be riding a bull. On February 1, 2009, at the age of 27, Josh died doing the thing he loved most – bull riding. In his loving memory, Chet Strain along with family and friends, pulled together to raise approximately $24,000 to establish the Josh Edward Griffin Memorial Scholarship Fund at Panola College. Scholarships will be awarded by the Rodeo Coach to qualified aspiring young cowboys/cowgirls to continue their education and rodeo dreams. An annual bull riding rodeo has also been developed to help replenish this scholarship fund each year. If you are interested in giving to this fund, please send donations to the Panola College Rodeo Program, Josh Edward Griffin Memorial Scholarship Fund, 1109 W. Panola, Carthage, TX 75633.

Economy Impacts College Appropriations The Texas Association of Community Colleges reported that “for the past twenty years, community colleges have grown steadily in enrollment and mission but have seen State financial support dwindle. In 1986 these colleges could count on State appropriations making up more than 60 percent of their budgets. Today State appropriations account for less than 30 percent of these budgets.” To make matters worse, these institutions were recently instructed to make plans to send five percent of their current year’s appropriations back to Austin and to expect five percent less funding next year. As a result, Panola College’s funding will be reduced by $400,000 at the same time it is educating a record number of students...more

"Most of the time when we talk about history, we talk about it in the sense of World War I and World War II — things that happened miles and miles away," history professor Curtis Odom said. "This gives students a sense of what's happened right here at home — 30 miles away." Johnson spoke as part of the college's monthly lunchbox lecture series. The lectures emphasize East Texas history, Odom said. - more
