Rodeo Legend to Speak at Panola College Rodeo Banquet

Tuff Hedeman

Panola College will host the 2nd Annual Rodeo Banquet to be held at the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame in Carthage, TX. on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at 7 p.m.  One of the most famous names in rodeo history, Tuff Hedeman, will be the featured speaker.  Hedeman is a three-time PRCA World Champion bull rider and the 1995 PBR World Champion. 

Other features of the banquet will include live and silent auctions of rodeo memorabilia and donated items, a fine meal, and great entertainment.  Admission will be $25 per plate.  You must RSVP by January 22, 2005 by calling 903-693-2008.  Mark your calendar and plan to attend this event.

HALLMARK TO GUIDE HISTORY COURSE ACROSS TEXAS

This spring Professor James Hallmark, will be leading Panola College’s Texas History 2301 course. This unique course provides students with the opportunity to tour highlights of the Lone Star State while earning three semester hours credit in just four adventure-filled days and three evening sessions. The course may be used to satisfy half of Panola College’s freshman history requirement, or it can serve as an exciting elective. Continuing education credit is available for public school teachers. High school students who have completed their junior year may also take the course for early admissions credit. Fannie Baldwin Watson was a member of the second graduating class of Panola College. She was active in the service organization, Green Jackets, and a staff member of the college’s newspaper, the Pony Express. Chapman Continues to Support Library

Chapman took charge of the Panola Junior College library in the fall of 1961. During her quarter century of service, she greatly increased the library’s holdings and established a decidedly user-friendly atmosphere for students and faculty.

FINLEY SIGNS WITH A&M

Panola College sophomore Jamar Finley, a 6’6” guard/forward from Rome, Georgia signed with Texas A&M University this morning at Panola College.  Jamar averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds last season for the Ponies, and is averaging 25 points and 15 rebounds thus far this season.  Finley is Billy Gillispie's first signee at Texas A&M.

The Panola College Speech Department is serving dinner in the Ballroom at 6:00 p.m., November 18 and 19. The family of Mr. Hubbard A. “Bubba” Clinton has initiated the establishment of a scholarship in his memory.  Once endowed, the Hubbard A. “Bubba” Clinton Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Panola College student. 

Mr. Clinton attended Panola College in the late 1940s. Later he served on the Panola College Board of Trustees from 1984-1989 as well the Panola College Foundation Board.  Mr. Clinton was a very generous and devoted member of the community who will be missed by many.

DR. CORDELL TO ADDRESS CONVENTION

Dr. Barbara Cordell will be making a presentation at the 2004 Annual N-OADN Convention (National Organization of Associate Degree Nursing) in Albuquerque, NM on November 12-14, 2004.  Her presentation is entitled Funding Collaborative Ventures for Retention: ADN & BSN Programs Working Together.  Panola College is part of a consortium in East Texas exploring creative ways to address the nursing shortage.  The group has received several grants to date to target at risk students in the nursing program and increase retention.  Dr. Cordell will be sharing the results of the consortium’s grant activities and data results with nursing educators from across the nation.

PANOLA COLLEGE SETS ENROLLMENT RECORD

This fall 1780 students chose to pursue their education at Panola College breaking a previous enrollment record set in the fall of 1996 of 1777. When asked to comment about the increase in enrollment, Dr. Gregory Powell, President of Panola College responded, “Everyone at the main campus and at the centers in Marshall and Center have been working to recruit students. I appreciate their dedication and am grateful for their hard work. Their efforts are especially important when you consider that this is a funding year, and enrollment figures will impact how much money we will receive from the state for the next two years.”

“I’m especially pleased with our health sciences programs. The vocational nursing, registered nursing and occupational therapy assistant programs continue to attract a large number of students who want to attend a quality program that is affordable, accredited and highly regarded.   “I am also excited about the College’s new Rodeo Team. It is attracting young men and women who in the past left our community to participate in collegiate rodeo programs at other schools,” said Powell. “Coach Jeb Barney has worked hard to recruit talented students and we are looking forward to a good year.”

PONIES SELECTED TO TEXAS-NEW MEXICO ALL-STAR TEAM

Two Panola College baseball players have been selected to the annual Texas-New Mexico Junior College Baseball Coaches All-Star Team.  Pitchers Dozier Taylor and Philip Lynch, along with 48 other top junior college sophomore prospects, will be participating in the All-Star games to be held at the Baylor University Baseball Field on Oct. 1 and 2 in Waco, Texas. 

Dozier is a 6'6" 220 lbs. right-handed pitcher from Springwoods High School in Houston.  Last year Dozier pitched a record 102 innings for the Ponies with an 8-6 record and a 2.74 era. 

Philip Lynch is a 6'5" 200 lbs. right-handed pitcher from Hampshire-Finett High School.  Last year, Philip helped lead Panola to the NJCAA Regional Playoffs with a 9-3 record and a 2.37 era.

AOTA, Panola College Occupational Therapy Assistant Program and Baker Koonce Intermediate School Join together to Lighten the Burden of School Backpacks

Carthage, TX — the Panola College Occupational Therapy Assistant Program is partnering with the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) to conduct a backpack awareness day on September 22^nd to educate children, parents, school administrators, teachers, and communities about the serious health effects to children from backpacks that are too heavy or worn improperly. PANOLA GRADS EXCEL AT UNT

Dr. Gregory Powell, President of Panola College recently received a report from the University of North Texas concerning the status of students who transferred from Panola College to UNT during the Summer 2003, Fall 2003 and/or Spring 2004 semesters.  The report reaffirmed what many East Texans already know…Panola College prepares students for success.

The University of North Texas reported that students who transferred from Panola College achieved an average cumulative GPA of 2.984, which surpassed the average cumulative GPA for all Texas Community College Transfers of 2.849 and the average cumulative GPA of native (UNT) students of 2.843. 

“Our graduates are pursuing degrees at the University of North Texas that vary from Biology, Business, and Journalism to Photography, Fashion and Interior Design,” said Dr. Powell. “We are proud of our alumni and wish them the very best for the future. Their success is a positive reflection on the faculty and staff and all the hard work they do to prepare our students.”

Carthage Bulldog, Eric Duckworth has signed a scholarship to continue his baseball career and education at Panola College. Duckworth, a top prospect for the last three seasons, helped lead the Bulldogs to within one game of the state tournament. In 2002, he was a key player for the Mickey Mantle World Series Champions, the Dallas Knights.  Eric was also an All District and All East Texas first team selection in 2003. This year Duckworth hit five homeruns, had 26 RBI’s and a   .383 batting average...more

Panola College had five student/athletes selected to the 2004 Region XIV Athletic Conference All Academic Team.  They include: Lea Ann Killian – Basketball; Tim Papa – Baseball; Daniel Beaver – Baseball; Michael Garcia – Baseball; and Caleb Barton – Baseball.

Each student athlete selected must have completed 3 semesters with a cumulative gpa of 3.25 or better, and have lettered in a varsity sport.

SIXTH ANNUAL PANOLA COLLEGE CANOE RACE

Panola College will host its annual canoe race on April 3, 2004. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. when faculty, staff and students from area colleges meet to enjoy refreshments in the courtyard of the Excelsior House Hotel in Jefferson, Texas. From there, teams will transport their canoes to the Freeman Plantation where the race will begin. The first team to reach the downtown boat ramp will be the winner.  

Last year, LeTourneau University students Ben Mullen and Michael Hendricks won first place and Josh Howett and Luke LaCelle, also LeTourneau University students, took second place. Tyler Junior College students Brian Malone and Jamy Parsons paddled to third place.
