With the conclusion of the Region 14 tournament, hosted by the University of Texas-Tyler, post-season awards winners have been released by the conference. Kayla Weaver, a sophomore from Aquilla, TX, was voted to the All-Region and All-Conference teams. Weaver finished the 2008-09 season with a 15.7 points per game average, in addition to pulling down 8.4 rebounds per game. "Kayla did an exceptional job for us this season. She has played through injuries, sickness and has consistently brought it all season. We owe alot of our success this year on her maturity and toughness. We are definitely going to miss her next season," commented head coach Tracey Stellato. In addition to Weaver, sophomore Niya Santiago from South Plainfield, NJ and freshman Tiffany Eubank, out of New Deal, TX were named All-Conference Honorable Mention. "We really were faced with a lot of adversity this season and I felt that my kids did a great job of continuing to fight the good fight." FILLIES DROP CLOSE ONE IN REGIONAL TOURNAMENT
(3/6/09)

The Panola Fillies rallied from 20 down in the first half to put themselves in a position to win Friday night, but came up 4 points short in their quarter-final loss to Angelina College in the Region 14 tournament, hosted by the University of Texas-Tyler. The Fillies battled back from a 20-point deficit Friday night, and got within 3 points of knotting the game at 72, but could not connect on four three point attempts in the remaining 1:16. "We got two great defensive stops in the last minute of play that gave us a chance to tie up the game. We got the ball back with :30 seconds to play and when we didn't get a good look in transition, I used my last time-out to see if we could draw up something that would give us a good look at the basket. The play was designed to get a look for our two leading scorers, Weaver and Eubank, and we got exactly what we wanted, but the shot just did not fall," added Stellato. The Fillies finish the 2008-09 season 14-17, advancing to the regional tournament for the 3rd straight year.  "We really fought through some difficult situations this season," noted Stellato, "and we had numerous opportunities to lay down and quit, but I felt that we kept fighting, kept working and that will pay off for us in the future."

PANOLA FILLIES PARTICIPATE IN WBCA "PINKZONE" INITIATIVE
(2/14/09)

It was a sea of pink Saturday as the Fillies hosted the Tyler Junior College Apache ladies on Valentine's Day. Saturday's "pink out" was held in honor of the late Kay Yow, the legendary women's basketball coach at North Carolina State University, who recently lost her battle with breast cancer. In addition to the pink t-shirts in honor of Kay Yow, the Fillies took the court Saturday in pink uniforms as a part of the WBCA "PinkZone" Initiative to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer and breast cancer research. "I had seen a lot of the big universities go all out with the pink uniforms for this great cause and really wanted Panola to get involved. Our kids raised all of the funds to purchase the uniforms through donations and sponsorships and the money we raised today from the sale of the uniforms, as well as our t-shirts will be sent to the Kay Yow Fund, set up by the WBCA." The Fillies topped off the day, with a thrilling 75-72 win over Tyler Junior College. "Kay Yow is a woman that has done so much for the sport of women's basketball. We have lost one of the greats within our game, but we hope to keep her legacy alive as we participate in this great cause."

"Defensively, I thought we were a little better in the second half, but we are still a work in progress," added Stellato.
